Are you feeding your soul? The Bible is food for the soul of man! Job said, “I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23:12). Jeremiah stated, “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts” (Jeremiah 15:16).

The Bible is God’s revelation to man. Only God can speak to man with absolute and final authority from a transcendent perspective. His revelation was given over a period of 1500 years through 40 different authors, yet it is one book without a proven contradiction in what it says. The Bible itself claims to be the revelation of God and that claim is completely supported through its fulfilled prophecy, unity, historicity and its impression upon human lives (II Peter 1:20-21). “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works”(II Timothy 3:16-17).

The purpose of the Bible is to bear witness to one God through Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of sinful humanity. Men cannot know the Heavenly Father without knowing the Son; and man cannot know the Son without an understanding of God unfolded in the Bible.

The Bible can lead us to salvation in Christ and equip us for every good work (Ephesians 4:12). True believers must be like the Bereans, for “they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily” (Acts 17:11). A Christian’s spiritual maturity is directly proportionate to the amount of time and effort he puts into the study of Scripture.

If a believer is not growing, it usually can be traced to a refusal to nourish his own soul in God’s Word. The results can be devastating:

  1. He complains of not getting much out of the Word;

  2. He is overcome by temptations, trials and problems;

  3. He lacks the energy and motivation to accomplish anything for the Lord. II Timothy 2:15 says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Are you being nourished by soul food, or are you a spiritual anorexic?
